Effective Parent-Teacher communication is essential to ensure the success of our Early Childhood Program. We have therefore set aside two evenings for the teachers to meet with you to discuss your child s progress. Conferences for Nursery, Pre-KII & KI will take place on Tuesday, May 12 from 6:20-9:00 p.m. Please see the next page with instructions to schedule appointments online. Please note that appointments are scheduled at ten minute intervals. If you come late to your appointment, you will not be able to have additional time. ECE Accreditation Update We are thrilled to announce that the Yeshiva Toras Chaim Toras Emes Early Childhood Division has received the National Council For Private School Accreditation.

3 INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE APPOINTMENTS 1) Go to address below into your browser window. 2) Log in using the following information: User ID: Your last name.last 4 Digits of your Home Phone#.ytc (i.e: Smith.1234.ytc) Password: ytc1836 3) Click on ENTER to go to the main screen. GETTING STARTED: Under CONFERENCES, select CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS. On the next screen, you will see a list of conference dates. In the SELECT column, click on the number (1 or 2) of your session. This will take you to the CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS screen. TO RESERVE YOUR TIME SLOTS: Your appointments for each session need to be made separately. Click on reserved of the desired time slot. If you need to see more appointments please increase rows to 100 and then you will see what is available for the time slots that you are looking for. Your reservation will appear on top of the screen. When you have scheduled all your appointments for one session, and you want to make appointments in another session as well, go back to the CONFERENCE PARTICIPANTS screen, select the other session and repeat the process for the other teachers conferences. If you select a teacher/time slot in error, go to the PARTICIPANT RESERVATIONS section and click on UNRESERVE to delete the appointment. When you have completed the reservation process, click on RESERVED TIME SLOTS (across the top of the screen) to see a list of your appointments. If you do not see this menu item, click on HOME; then click RESERVED TIME SLOTS (under Conferences). Print your schedule by selecting FILE/PRINT, or by holding down the CONTROL and P keys at the same time. If you experience difficulty while scheduling your appointments, or do not have computer access, please call Mrs. Roth in the ECE office at and she will gladly assist you in the process (with a smile!) REMEMBER APPOINTMENTS ARE AVAILABLE ON A FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVED BASIS. THEREFORE, WE URGE YOU TO SCHEDULE YOUR APPOINTMENTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

4 Nursery news JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT SHULAMIS & TAMI The yeladim continued learning about Lag Ba Omer and the importance of being kind to one another. Many beautiful midrashim about the lives of Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai were told to the children. To help the children understand the importance of getting along well with their friends, we listened to the story That s What A Friend Is For by P.K. Hallinan. We also discussed the many minhagim that we observe on Lag Ba Omer, such as going on outings, lighting bonfires and cutting our hair. We made our own "make believe" bonfire, piled high with long blocks as the logs and red, yellow and orange paper as the fire. We sat in a circle pretending to be at a bonfire. We sang and danced around the bonfire and even roasted marshmallows. Parashas Emor was a great review for us. We talked about the different Yamim Tovim that take place during the year. We learned the song All Around The Year to the tune of The Wheels On The Bus. We talked about the concept of Kiddush Hashem and Chilul Hashem. We reviewed what we learned about the Shalosh Regalim, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. We were very proud to hear how much the children remembered from the beginning of the year. This week, the yeladim in Nursery continued learning the letters Bais and Vais. We had a lot of fun identifying words that begin with these letters. For Chag HaShavuos, we talked about Matan Torah and learned about the minhagim connected with this chag such as decorating our homes with flowers, eating dairy foods and learning Torah all night long. We sang the song Tov Tov Lilmod Torah and On Top Of Har Sinai. SECULAR STUDIES MOROT SHULAMIS & SUSAN This week, we continued our unit on opposites. The children have learned this concept easily. They enjoyed using all of the pre-reading materials such as matching opposite cards to reinforce this unit. During our learning centers, we learned about top and bottom. We completed a listening activity where the children were given specific instructions about drawing objects on the top and bottom of each page. What a great job they did! We also put our art skills to practice making a picture of "Day and Night". Once again, the children had a chance to visit the Early Childhood Library with our own Library cards. The class gets to pick out their own books and we sit in the library to read for a while before we bring our books back to class. At the end of the week the children will return their books and take their library cards home. Our nursery class has really had such a wonderful experience using the School Library. We learned two opposite action songs this week, Open, Shut Them and Rolly Polly Polly, Rolly polly polly (rolll hands) up up up (wave hands up) Rolly polly polly (roll hands) down down down (wave hands down) Rolly polly polly (roll hands) out out out (wave hands out) Rolly polly polly (roll hands) in in in (Wave hands in) During our art centers this week the class practiced their cutting skills. The children were able to cut out various shapes.

5 PRe-K PAGES JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT HEIDI & NECHAMA This week s parsha is Parashas Emor. The Parsha talks about Shabbos and all of the Yomim Tovim. It reviews all of the special Mitzvos related to each Yom Tov. We also talked about the concept of making a Kiddush Hashem and came up with many examples of how we can make a kiddush Hashem. We celebrated Lag Ba Omer by building a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and singing and dancing around the campfire. We also played in the playground that the big kids use and ate ices. We talked about how Lag Ba Omer is celebrated in Meron. This week we introduced the letter צ and added many words to our growing vocabularies. Some of the words that we learned were: צפרדע צואר צפור צב צלחת ציצית Some of the books the Pre-K children enjoyed this week were: All For The Best by Sarah Binhack, The Truth About Making Friends by Shmuel Walder and Mihu The Detective and the Mystery of the Blue Budgie by Chaiky Halpern. SECULAR STUDIES MORAH JUDY This week Pre-K children continued preparing for the AROUND THE WORLD Performance. They made decorations and sang songs. Our country this week was Africa. The children saw pictures of families from Africa and children playing in Africa. We spoke about wild animals living in the jungles of Africa, such as giraffes, zebras, elephants and lions. Our letter this week was Uu. The children shared words such as, up, under, umbrella and upstairs. We read a book called A Bus For Us by Suzanne Blum. It is a story about children waiting for a bus. While they are waiting they recognize other vehicles that come by the bus stop before their bus. The children have been practicing everyday to write their names, numbers and the date. They also practiced writing I LOVE MY MOM. A highlight of our week was talking about how special each and every mother is to their children. They were proud to make special surprises for their mothers. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ALL OUR WONDERFUL MOTHERS!!!!

6 kindergarten CORNER JUDAIC STUDIES MOROT BAYLA & RENA Lag Ba'Omer was the theme of the week in kindergarten. The yeladim learned the story of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. We discussed why he had to hide from the Romans and how he learned Torah for many years. We heard about the miraculous tree that sustained him and his son Elazar for thirteen years in the cave. His kever in the city of Meron is a special place of gathering for people in Israel today. Bonfires, haircuts, and special songs are part of the celebration. We celebrated Lag Ba Omer by building our own bonfire. We sang and danced around the bonfire and roasted marshmallows. The children also went across the street to the boys' playground and enjoyed delicious ice pops. This week, we met the letter shin. The children thought of so many words beginning with a shin. We also found many shin words in the siddur. Shem sheli and shel mi zeh were some phrases that we used this week. Thank you for reviewing the homework sheets. The reinforcement at home is making your child into an Aleph Beis pro! For Parshas Emor, we discussed the ways in which we can create a Kiddush Hashem in our daily lives. We also learned about the korbanos that were offered on the Yomim Tovim. We reviewed each Yom Tov and the special mitzvos that go along with each. For Pirkei Avos we learned the mishnah in Perek Revi'i "Eizehu Ashir Hasameach B'chelko." We explained to the children that someone is considered rich if they are happy with what they have in life. For project Derech we learned that it is a mitzvah to stand up for a zakein. SECULAR STUDIES MOROT HEIDI & PEARLY Can you believe that the year is nearly over? It's almost graduation! The children are so excited about this special day. We have been practicing for the big production! This week in math we continued learning and reviewing all the 3-dimensional shapes. We also reviewed addition and subtraction. The children enjoyed sorting objects from a tray. When they were done sorting the objects, they counted to see which group had more objects and which group had less. The children are working on their end of the year projects. They are drawing, writing and dictating stories from the school year. This week the children enjoyed making their very special mother's day gifts and cards. We hope you like the surprise!!!!! 7 Erev Shabbos Parashas Emor 5775 Dear Parents, In enumera ng the types of animals that are permissible to be brought for a korban, the Torah (Vayikra 22:27) enumerates the ox, sheep and goat. The Midrash, (Medrash Rabba 22:5) explains that only these animals are suitable for being brought as a sacrifice because these animals do not prey on any other animal, and, as it says in Koheles (3:15), Hashem seeks out (and defends) the pursued. In fact, as the Midrash discusses at length, Hashem always sides with the pursued, even when the pursuer is a Tzaddik (righteous) and the pursued is a Rasha(wicked)!! There is something about an individual or group or na on that is pursued by others that elicits an automa c reflexive defense mechanism, if you will, on Hashem s part. When there is an imbalance in power, and the more powerful uses his power to press his advantage over the weaker person or group, Hashem rises to defend the vic m, by repaying the powerful one for his misdeeds. Throughout life we deal with imbalances between people. There s a boss at work, and people with greater wealth, power and influence than me or that my group has. One of the reasons (according to the Midrash) that Hashem favors and protects the Jewish People, is precisely because we were falling prey to the more powerful and migh er na ons seeking our destruc on. It is neither our righteousness nor Yichus (genealogy) alone, that protects us. Perhaps more than adults, children live in a world of great imbalances. There are the mighty adults who control prac cally everything in the child s life. There are older siblings who exert great power over a younger sibling. There are older and bigger children in school. There are for many, classmates who are more successful academically, socially or on the ball field. It is only natural, specifically for those who are vic ms in one or more circumstances, to seek out rela onships in which he or she is the stronger, bigger, smarter, or more capable one of the group. The tendency to bully others, to exert power over another in any realm available to the par cular child is very strong. External measures to curb such inappropriate behavior, is somewhat limited in their effec veness if we don t work on the internal world of the child. The realiza on that Hashem Himself is concerned for the vic m, that He will always take the side of the persecuted and downtrodden, may help our children realize that it is Hashem s will that they protect, rather than a ack a weaker classmate. Parents can make an invaluable contribu on to their children s developing character, by encouraging emula ng this Midda of Hashem to always look out for and defend the well-being of the vic m.
